Sensory Plants
For Children

There is a world of exploration
for children in your garden!
When summer comes and school is
out, it's probably the farthest
thing from their minds! But once
the baseball games
and swimming
pools wear them out to the
point of exhaustion- what could
be more fun that to have nothing
better to do than play in the dirt!

How 'bout instead of asking
them to weed the garden for you
if you could play a sensory game
outside in the yard. You know,
back to basics, no tools required,
no electricity needed- just a game
of imagination and, possibly
learning(!)

We are going to start off with
the sense of sight- let them use their
eyes to enjoy all the colors a garden
has to offer! Here are a list of the
most visually-interesting and attractive
flowers for children-

  • Sunflowers
  • Zinnias
  • Tulips

Who can resists such vivid colors?
    Here's a visual feast for
    a child-the Chameleon plant!
First of all, they'll be intrigued
by the clever name. No, it doesn't
    change colors, but it does
love sun or shade! It leafs out in
    yellow, green, bronze and red!
Five plants can cover 7 square feet
with a dense mat, about 6-9 inches tall
It does well in zones 5-8.

    Now let's close our eyes!
    Can you hear that?
    Are you listening?
What are some of the sounds
    in this garden?
Can you hear the wind blow
    the dogs bark?
    the crickets, the locusts,
    The chirping birds?
    Can you make out the
    sound of a buzzing bee?

    Do you hear a lawnmower
    in the distance or a
lazy cat purring in the porch?
Does the sound of the water
    sprinkling from the hose
    sharpen your senses?

    Well, your sensory
    experience in the garden
has only begun! Turn the page
